‘My grandmother doesn’t want to go back to the Resistance Museum.’

‘Why?’

‘Something spooked her in a photo of a woman pushing a pram of sacks.’

‘Go without her.’

‘But it’s good with her. She remembers and tells me what it was like.’

‘You know, there was a porcelain factory in one of the concentration camps. You can recognise the pieces by a certain mark on the bottom. I have a client who collects it.’

‘Jeetje, do they keep their collection secret?’

‘No.’

‘Do you hunt for any secret collections?’

‘I don’t ask.’ He shrugged. ‘I just find things.’

‘What are you hunting for now?’

‘Space toys, shoes for a cross-dresser, WiiSports for a physiotherapist, Mickey Mouse things. Props for a movie.’

‘It’s all in the clever machine?’ I said.

‘Ja.’ He looked at me this time. ‘Thanks, Henni.’

He wanted to know about Willa. He laughed when I described the twee oudes at breakfast. I told him everything about a wedding coming up, and folding serviettes into swans. Then I told him about Willa’s childhood in the war. It all tumbled out, but I was careful to keep the Cornelia story secret. I also told him about a bust-up in the family and the son that shot through, and the dear old grandfather that was worried. I watched his face. Nothing.

‘You are really inside this Dutch family,’ he said.
